Eco-Friendly Dentistry
We care about the planet, and we know that you do too…
Dental offices can produce an abundance of environmental hazards and unnecessary
waste. It is our goal to keep these to a minimum while
serving you. Our commitment to the health and safety of our
community and our planet is a key concern that we don’t take lightly. Our daily efforts are centered on reducing our carbon footprint.
Paper Reduction Initiative - Computerized
Records - Digital X-Ray Technology
Mercury Elimination Initiative
Most dental offices use an abundance of paper products. From
the paperwork you fill out when you walk through their door to the reminder card
you get in the mail at check-up time, most dentists don’t bat an eye and
consider this a necessity. Our focus on paper waste reduction
allows you to fill out your registration paperwork online with no need to print
anything at all.
By using completely computerized record keeping, there is no need for our
patients to have charts busting at the seams with forms and treatment records.
Our file encryption safety precautions ensure that these records are more
secure than any paper charting system could guarantee.
Traditional film x-ray systems produce enormous amounts of paper waste and
necessitate offices to dispose of lead backing that comes with every single
x-ray. In addition, toxic chemicals must be used in order to
develop traditional film x-rays, and these chemicals require specific handling
and disposal protocols. Our digital x-ray technology
completely eliminates the need for the chemicals, lead and paper waste
associated with traditional x-rays.
Studies show that digital x-rays also use up to
90 percent less radiation than
traditional film x-rays. While film x-rays are still
considered safe for use, we think the less radiation that you and your family
are exposed to, the better.
For over 150 years, silver mercury fillings have been one of the most commonly
used materials in dentistry. They contain approximately 40-50%
mercury, 25% silver and 25-35% tin/copper/zinc mixture. There
is no question that mercury is one of the most hazardous waste products that
dental offices produce. After years of controversy, the Food
& Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a statement that these fillings are
unsafe for expecting mothers and children due to neurotoxicity.
Here are just a few other ways that we are working toward a better environment
for you and your family:
-
Minimization of paper use
through electronic correspondence with insurance companies, suppliers, and our
specialist colleagues.
-
Computerization of patient
reminders and billing that eliminate wasteful patient reminder mailers and
statements.
-
Intentional utilization of
natural light within our practice, as well as exterior neon
lighting…more expensive but better environmental stewardship.
-
Utilization of HVAC system
with a high SEER (seasonal energy efficiency ratio) for increased efficiency
that uses less electricity.
-
Energy efficient washer and
dryer units.
-
Utilization of programmable
thermostats that ensure a more regulated office temperature for all hours of all
seasons.
-
Use of low VOC (volatile
organic carbon) latex paints and partially recycled construction materials.
-
Constantly seeking products,
vendors and suppliers who contribute to environmental and socially responsible
causes.
